Supporting Mental Wellness for Colusa County Youth

The official logo for the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative, featuring white text reading CYBHI on a blue background.

The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) is a statewide effort to improve how children, youth, and families access mental health and wellness supports. Here in Colusa County, the Colusa County Office of Education is working with schools, families, and community partners to bring these supports closer to where students learn and grow. Through our School-Based Mental Health Services Department, we are strengthening partnerships, expanding prevention and early intervention, and building clearer pathways to care. Our goal is to reduce barriers for families in our rural communities and help students feel connected, supported, and ready to learn and thrive.

What is a Certified Wellness Coach?

Certified Wellness Coaches (CWCs) are trained professionals who help children and youth build skills that support their mental health and overall well-being. Created through California’s CYBHI, this role expands access to prevention and early intervention where young people learn and grow.  Through the Colusa County Office of Education’s CYBHI Wellness Pilot Program, our coaches currently serve two participating sites: George T. Egling School and Maxwell Elementary/Middle School, with the hope of expanding these supports countywide. Coaches provide classroom wellness lessons, small-group activities, and individual coaching and check-ins to help students manage emotions, strengthen relationships, develop healthy coping skills, and feel connected to school.  Under the supervision of our Mental Health Coordinators, coaches partner with families and school staff and help connect students to additional services when needed. Their non-clinical services complement counseling and other mental health care, bringing early support closer to students and families in our rural communities.
