The Mission of WorkAbility I is to promote the active involvement of key stakeholders, including students, in planning and implementing a comprehensive array of services that support successful transition to employment, lifelong learning, and a high quality of adult life. A central focus of WorkAbility I is helping students develop individualized transition plans that guide their journey from school to work, including the exploration of post-secondary education and training options.
Through career assessments, students identify their strengths, interests, and goals while gaining exposure to a wide range of college and career pathways. Work-based learning is an essential component of the program, providing students with real-world experiences that build foundational employment skills such as communication, time management, and job-specific technical abilities. Through individualized supports and practical job experiences, the WorkAbility I Program empowers students with disabilities to build confidence, gain independence, and transition into adulthood with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to thrive in the world of work.
The WorkAbility I staff engage and collaborate with students, families, educators, employers, and community agencies to design and deliver services that promote meaningful employment, lifelong learning, independent living, and an enhanced quality of life. As a California Department of Education grant program, WorkAbility I benefits students, employers, and the broader community by addressing local workforce needs through coordinated business partnerships and by providing comprehensive pre-employment and transition services for students receiving special education.
