Second Step
Second Step provides services to children who are experiencing mild-to-moderate school adjustment difficulties in terms of social behaviors related to peers and teachers, or with classroom study behaviors. The program teaches skills in the following four areas:
- Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
- Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others' feelings. Students also learn how to take another perspective and how to show compassion.
- Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety and anger.
- Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
The Second Step Program is currently offered at Arbuckle Elementary School, Burchfield Primary School, Williams Primary Elementary School, and Williams Upper Elementary School. Trainings are also offered to staff at Hand-in-Hand Early Learning Center, and a trainer-to-trainer model is used in partnership with Children’s Services.
Resources for Families
Early Mental Health Initiative (EMHI)
The goals of the EMHI are to enhance the social and emotional development of young students; increase the likelihood that students experiencing mild to moderate school adjustment difficulties will succeed in school; increase their personal competencies related to life success; and minimize the need for more intensive and costly services as they grow older. Second Step is funded by this initiative through Colusa County Behavioral Health.
